Anecdotal: patient-reported

Bone Broth

Also known as: Chicken broth · Beef bone broth · Collagen broth

A comforting food many people with Crohn’s lean on during flares. Members describe it as soothing, but there’s no clinical research behind it.

Why people try it

Bone broth is simmered for many hours to draw out gelatin, amino acids and minerals. It’s easy to digest when solid food is difficult, and it features in popular IBD diets such as the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, so it’s a common go-to during flares.

What people report

  • Several Crohn’s Forum members described broth as soothing and easy to tolerate during flares.
  • One member felt their fistula was quieter when they drank broth regularly.
  • One member managed a flare on a broth-based diet for a while.

Counter-reports & downsides

  • That same member still needed prednisolone to reach remission.
  • A homemade batch upset one member’s stomach.
  • Some members raised concerns about lead leaching from bones into broth.

What the research says

There are no clinical studies of bone broth in Crohn’s disease. Its practical value is as an easy-to-digest source of fluid, salt and some protein during flares, when eating is difficult.

No published studies in IBD yet.

Forms people mention

Homemade broth, or ready-made broths and powders.

Amounts people mention online are personal choices, not recommendations.

Safety

  • Shop-bought broths can be very high in salt.
  • Broth alone isn’t nutritionally complete. Long broth-only stretches risk malnutrition, which people with Crohn’s are already prone to.

If you decide to try it

Talk to your gastroenterologist first, especially if you take prescription medication. If you go ahead, these quality markers help:

  • Low-sodium versions if buying ready-made
  • Short ingredient lists, without onion or garlic if those trigger your symptoms

Phase 2 — in development

Where traditional research stops, our community begins

Natural compounds can’t be patented, so they rarely get the multi-million-dollar trials that drugs receive. That leaves people with Crohn’s without answers to the questions that matter most: what actually helps, at what dose, and for whom? Our Community Symptom Tracker will crowdsource those answers from real people living with Crohn’s, and our upcoming wellness store will make it easy to find quality, third-party-tested products.

  • Log your symptoms, supplements and doses in a private daily tracker
  • See what’s working for people with the same disease location and medications
  • Contribute to the largest real-world dataset on natural Crohn’s support
  • Shop curated, third-party-tested protocols from our upcoming store
