Anecdotal: patient-reported

Bovine Colostrum

Also known as: Colostrum · Serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin (SBI)

The antibody-rich first milk from cows. Forum reports are notably mixed, quality varies a lot by brand, and human IBD research is limited.

Why people try it

Colostrum is the first milk a cow produces after giving birth. It’s rich in antibodies (immunoglobulins) and growth factors, and people hope it will strengthen the gut lining and calm immune activity. A related, more concentrated product, serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin (SBI), is sold in the US as a medical food for use under medical supervision.

What people report

  • A Crohn’s Forum member said a few days of colostrum capsules seemed to settle their inflammation, though they later weren’t sure it was the cause.
  • Another member felt only one premium brand worked for them, suspecting cheaper products are mostly ordinary milk powder.

Counter-reports & downsides

  • One member said colostrum powder made their joints and gut worse, and stopped taking it.
  • Members summed up colostrum as hit or miss.

What the research says

Human evidence for colostrum in IBD is very limited; a 2021 review of colostrum in IBD drew mainly on laboratory and animal studies. The closest human data comes from SBI. A 2015 look back at the records of IBD patients, mostly with Crohn’s, who weren’t responding well to standard drugs found they were more likely to report symptom improvement after adding SBI. It had no control group, and half of its authors worked for the company that makes SBI.

Safety

  • Not suitable if you have a cow’s milk allergy.
  • Quality varies widely between brands, and products aren’t standardised for antibody content.
  • Some people report their symptoms got worse.

If you decide to try it

Talk to your gastroenterologist first, especially if you take prescription medication. If you go ahead, these quality markers help:

  • Stated immunoglobulin (IgG) percentage on the label
  • Third-party tested for purity
  • If dairy upsets you, try a small amount first

Phase 2 — in development

Where traditional research stops, our community begins

Natural compounds can’t be patented, so they rarely get the multi-million-dollar trials that drugs receive. That leaves people with Crohn’s without answers to the questions that matter most: what actually helps, at what dose, and for whom? Our Community Symptom Tracker will crowdsource those answers from real people living with Crohn’s, and our upcoming wellness store will make it easy to find quality, third-party-tested products.

  • Log your symptoms, supplements and doses in a private daily tracker
  • See what’s working for people with the same disease location and medications
  • Contribute to the largest real-world dataset on natural Crohn’s support
  • Shop curated, third-party-tested protocols from our upcoming store
